Post-Operative MLD

Post-Operative MLD image

Post-operative MLD is used to support recovery following surgical procedures. The treatment involves gentle movements that stimulate lymphatic circulation, assisting in the removal of excess interstitial fluid and reducing post-operative oedema. MLD also helps improve tissue healing, decrease discomfort associated with swelling, and support the recovery process.

Treatment should only commence once medically appropriate and in accordance with your surgeon's or healthcare provider's recommendations. As post-operative swelling is typically greatest during the first week, 2–3 treatment sessions per week are recommended during this period. Thereafter, 1–2 sessions per week are generally advised until oedema has resolved and further treatment is no longer clinically indicated. The frequency and

duration of treatment will be determined by the surgical procedure performed, the extent of swelling, and the individual's rate of recovery.

All treatments are adapted to the patient's stage of healing and are provided within the therapist's scope of practice to support safe and effective post-operative rehabilitation.

Clients are advised to wear compression garments to their appointments to achieve the best possible outcome. Please also make sure that any open incisions are covered when attending.

Supportive Treatment Add-Ons

Following surgery, supportive therapies can further enhance the benefits of your Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) treatment and support your recovery.

Kinesiology Taping can be particularly beneficial during the later stages of healing, when compression garments are worn for fewer hours each day. It provides gentle support during periods when your garment is not being worn, helping to encourage continued lymphatic drainage and complementing the effects of your MLD treatment.

Please note: A patch test is required at least 24 hours before your appointment to ensure your skin tolerates the adhesive.

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) utilises a combination of laser, pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF), and infrared light, and can also be incorporated into your MLD treatment to help regulate the body's inflammatory response and support tissue healing. Following surgery, scar tissue and fibrosis can cause areas of tissue to become firm or restricted. When clinically appropriate, these therapies may be used alongside MLD and other treatment techniques to help soften fibrotic tissue, improve tissue mobility, and support ongoing lymphatic drainage.

Every treatment is individually assessed to ensure these supportive add-ons are appropriate for your stage of healing and your clinical needs. If you would like to include any of these therapies as part of your treatment, simply select the relevant add-on(s) before checkout. I will contact you prior to your appointment to discuss your suitability and, if required, arrange a patch test for kinesiology taping.
